When one sees the phrase "ascetic" with texts or books, they might consider them something irrelevant to people living in the world. This, however, is not true. The spirit of the life of the Church of Christ is ascetic. The sublime gifts of the Holy Spirit are not acquired with comfort, but in the arduous struggle in the "arena of the virtues." The ascetic texts are drawn from the experience of this Christian struggle and give us the necessary resources for our own struggle, regardless of whether we are engaged in it in the world.
